Restoration of a stone façade, Montréal, Québec

Client: TD Bank

Project manager: Ettore Palazzese, TD Bank

General contractor: Endi Construction

Sub-contractor, masonry restoration: Tomassini+Frères Ltée

Sub-contractor, façade cleaning: HB Group Inc

This project entails the restoration of the facades of the building located at the corner of Bleury and St. Catherine. Typical of the 1920s, its masonry finish consists primarily of gray stone. It was built originally for the Toronto Dominion Bank and is currently occupied by the TD Bank.

The scope of work for this project was as follows:

The oxidised copper flashing, blackened and broken were cleaned and repaired for improved waterproofing. The stones and neoclassical moldings on the façade were dirty, cracked, damaged and detaches from the façade. They were restored using mortar repairs and resurfacing.
The trace of dripping oxidation of copper penetrated the stone façade. A series of low pressure water jets were used to clear the grit and accumulated dirt on the façade. The original wooden frames were damaged beyond repair. The windows were replaced with new aluminum windows with characteristics similar to the original. Some façade ornamentation such as the ornamental steel grate in front of small windows flanking the main entrance and the conerstone were replaced with new ones.
